Sherlock Holmes (2009) – review

SHERLOCK HOLMES –  You know what? I’m loving the new Mr. Guy Ritchie post Madonna. Not sure if this is true but it seems to me that he is making better films. Rocknrolla was a fun ride, with a great cast, and that Guy Ritchie type colors and pace. And now Sherlock Holmes (also directed by: Guy Ritchie)!  It was a joy from start to finish. Very cool recreation of ancient London in its day, the art direction,  powerpacked action scenes, and just about every detail making this a feast for the eyes – with a plot you can actually follow! Robert Downey Jr. (as Holmes) and Jude Law (as Watson) are truly dynamite together – at times a little gay, as if there is more to their “friendship” than meets the eye. But hey, I guess they’re just English. Lord Blackwood, played by the incredible Mark Strong (remember, he was just as amazing as Hani, in Body of Lies). However, Rachel McAdams’ presence in this movie is as unnecessary as Rene Russo in the Lethal Weapon movies. Don’t get me wrong; these ladies can hold their own both as actresses and as action heroes, but Irene Adler (played by McAdams) didn’t really do much in Sherlock Holmes. Clearly, they just wanted a hot chick in their flick. Ritchie’s signature multi-angled, slow-mo ass-kicking sequences serve a better purpose in this film, actually perfected by giving us a look into the racing mind of Holmes, delivering a refreshing, bigger impact compared to the fast paced, quickly cut action we see in most Hollywood blockbusters of today. This is a film for the big screen, and I enjoyed every minute of it. *** Leave your comments below!!!
