Can “Burlesque” put Christina back on top?

Posted Nov. 18, 2010

God knows Christina Aguilera can sing like nobody’s business.  She is sexy, has a kick-ass stage presence, and remains popular with people who know talent when they see it. But can she bring all of that onto the big screen in “Burlesque” and become like her co-starring super star CHER?

Christina became one of the biggest names in pop music alongside Britney Spears with her single “Genie in a Bottle” – hard to believe that was over a decade ago.  All this time, she didn’t have a crazy meltdown like Britney, nor Mariah.  She has sold more than 16 million albums in the United States and won five Grammy awards.  However, the singer has had a tough time lately. Her fourth (English) studio album, “Bionic,” received mixed reviews and sold just 110,000 copies after its first week of release. Two weeks before the release of the CD, she suddenly postponed her North American summer tour until next year –  reason?  Too busy a schedule.

Last month, the 29 year-old singer filed for divorce from Jordan Bratman, her husband of five years. The couple has a 2-year-old son together.

Now, with the movie ‘Burlesque’ it can be Christina’s vehicle to rise to massive stardom, just like Whitney Huston did with the movie “bodyguard.” So, think positive:  more of that Whitney “bodyguard” magic, and less of that Mariah Carrey (as in “Glitter”) disaster. Not to mention Mariah Carrey is still very much in demand and gets major props for giving the acting another shot with her highly successful role in “Precisous.”

In short, we are pulling for our Christina.
