“Star Wars” Will Never End

Yes, George Lucas is doing it again…and again…and again. As in: Disney and Lucas Films announced that Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters in the summer of 2015 and that every summer after that will offer a new “Star Wars” film.

Sure, when “Star Wars came out, it was a different animal. But now, the only animals that come to mind are a horse and a cow—as in “beating a dead horse”and “cash cow.”

Just why does the public need a new “Star Wars” every year?

The BNH view: Haven’t the “Wars” addicts gotten enough cinematic fixes by now? Or, are the upcoming “Wars” movies simply an excuse to invent another space age weapon and/or character for George Lucas to sell and market? Maybe something called, “The Liposuction Saber”—that takes pounds and chins off of the first “Star Wars” cast (Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, etc.)

Besides, there are other Sci-fi movies (and better ones) that deserve a sequel/pre-quel/etc-quel. Like—“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (the pod people wind up being predictable pop plastic people. Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, The Smith kids!?

Or…

They dusted off the “Planet of the Apes,” surely Hollywood and James Cameron can re-think “The Terminator?” Perhaps re-enact Maria Shriver terminating her marriage to one Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger?  However, directing real actors and not “Avatars” may be too much for Mr. Cameron.

Then again….

When Hollywood rethinks a successful movie or franchise, another “different animal” comes to mind: “Let dead dogs lie—as in don’t make a dog of a movie by “rethinking” a hit sci-fi movie (i.e., the last gasps of “Aliens, “Jurassic Park etc.”)

Star Wars will never end. But, to quote the jazz pianist, Fats Waller, “One never knows, do one?” Maybe under George Lucas’ billions of dollars is one more great “Star Wars” script that we’ll all see in 2015.

And if you believe that, I have a galaxy to sell you. A galaxy far, far, far….
